Cannot resist clicking to the next chapter at 1 AM. Cannot justify sleeping when there is
obviously a cliffhanger they haven’t resolved. Your chapter hooks are the mechanism that
makes this happen, and if you’re not treating them as seriously as any other craft

The Opening Hook: Drop Readers Into the Middle of
Something
The first line of a chapter should feel like someone grabbed you by the collar. Not ‘Clara
woke up that morning with a sense of unease.’ That’s an alarm clock. Try: ‘He was already
in the apartment when I got home. Sitting in my chair. Wearing my brother’s watch.’
Three sentences. We have threat, invasion of privacy, and a mystery that demands
explanation. The reader is not going anywhere.
The strongest opening hooks drop you into the middle of a situation — in media res — and
provide just enough context to make the strangeness comprehensible while withholding
